Cover Letters are Important

Writing cover letters can be tedious and everyone hates to write one.  But unfortunately, they are really important in the job search process so if you're looking for a job it's time to get your cover letter writing skills in order.

A good cover letter can advance your application while a poorly written letter (or none at all) can do just the opposite. Recruiters and hiring managers often cite the cover letter as the reason one candidate may have been chosen for an interview over the other. So, it’s critical that you don’t overlook this important step. Even if you’re just passively seeking and come across an interesting job opportunity, take the time to submit a well written letter; it's great practice. Here are some other reasons why a cover letter is still important.

Why write a cover letter?

  • Imagine you have to read through 10+ resumes a day, many of which look the same, and you’ll quickly realize how refreshing it is to read a good cover letter.
  •

  • Without one you look just like all the other candidates. With a well written one, you can showcase your experience and your personality.
  •

  • It’s part of your marketing package and a place to highlight specific skills or accomplishments that qualify you for the job.
  •

  • It provides a future employer with an automatic writing sample and shows your ability to communicate through written word (an important overlooked skill).
  •

  • It shows that you are a motivated candidate who takes the time to prove they’re worth interviewing which is the only way you’ll get hired.
  •
