Mid-South Regional Pharmacy Residents' Conference

Thursday, May 3 - Friday, May 4, 2012

Fogelman Executive Conference Center
330 Innovation Drive
Memphis, TN  38152

About the Conference

The Mid-South Regional Pharmacy Residents’ Conference is being convened for the purpose of providing an opportunity for post-graduate pharmacy trainees in the mid-south region to formally present results of their research and major projects in a collegial, professional setting. The conference is modeled after the Southeastern Residents Conference (SERC). This networking opportunity allows for fellowship, relationship development, and collegial sharing of ideas and information.

History of the Conference

The mid-south area has long been an area where pharmacy resident training is valued and encouraged. A large number of pharmacy resident training opportunities are offered by organizations in this geographic area. Previously, in order to collaborate in a regional residents’ conference, programs from this area were forced to travel significant distances – most often to engage in either the Southeastern or Midwest Residents’ Conference. The growth in number of residency programs and positions, coupled with the desire of these programs to have their residents share the results of their research efforts, led to the generation of this new “conference.” Originally known as the Memphis-Area Invitational Pharmacy Residents’ Conference, the first two conferences were held on the campus of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The conference has expanded to allow participation from all interested programs, and the site has been moved to accommodate a greater number of participants.

Accreditation Statement

This activity, intended for Pharmacists, has been planned and implemented in accordance with the essential areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), through the sponsorship of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Contact hours: Total number of contact hours (CEUs) available for attending this event will be made available the day of the event and will be based on the total number of speaker registrants. Complete details will be contained within the registration booklets available the day of the event. Total number of credit hours awarded for each registrant will be based on the total number of presentation sessions attended for the event.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Pharmaceutical Department, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Pharmacy continuing education credit will be available to all participants who attend, sign in, and complete presenter evaluation forms. Statements will be mailed approximately three weeks following the date of the conference.

Disclosure of Conflict of Interest

As the provider of CPE credit, St. Jude assesses conflict of interest with its faculty and resident speakers who are in a position to control the content of CPE activities. All potential conflicts of interest that are identified are thoroughly reviewed for fair balance, scientific objectivity of studies used in the activity, and patient care recommendations. The Mid-South Regional Pharmacy Residents’ Conference and St. Jude are committed to providing a unique CPE learning forum that promotes improvements in health care and the sharing or exchanging of innovative patient care ideas and research concepts in pharmaceutical care.

Registration Check-In

Residents and preceptors who are registered and attending the conference may pick up their conference materials and name badges in the designated check-in area in the lobby of the Fogelman Executive Conference Center, main floor. The check-in area will be open approximately 1.5 hours before the opening of the conference on Thursday, prior to the Opening Session. A box lunch will be served on Thursday beginning 11:30 a.m.

Keynote speaker

Our keynote speaker is ASHP past-president and Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award winner David A. Zilz, BSPharmacy, MS, FASHP. Mr. Zilz is currently Corporate Pharmacy Programs Senior Consultant with University of Wisconsin Health Systems, and Independent Contractor for Pharmacy Consulting Services. Mr. Zilz has been instrumental in influencing the “leadership agenda” for the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, as evidenced by the naming of the David A. Zilz Leaders for the Future Fund within the ASHP Foundation.

Meeting for Moderators and Evaluators

A brief meeting for all moderators and evaluators will be held on Thursday, immediately prior to the conference. The purpose of this meeting is to communicate details regarding the moderation of the sessions, and regarding evaluating the presenters. All moderators and evaluators are strongly encouraged to attend.

Resident Presentations

The conference itself consists of several distinct, concurrent sessions, each with 5-6 concurrent presentations active in separate rooms. Many of the rooms will have presentations on common themes so that preceptors and residents with a specific interest might be able to stay in one room throughout the session. Each resident has 15 minutes allocated for their presentation (rule of thumb: 12 minutes for their presentation and 3 minutes for questions). There are 5 minutes between presentations to make it possible for individuals to easily move to the next presentation.

All residents and preceptors are strongly encouraged to fill out an evaluation form on each presentation they attend. There will be a designated evaluator in each room who will meet briefly with the resident after their presentation to give them constructive feedback. Presentation Evaluation Forms will be available at the conference.

In addition to the continental breakfast and buffet lunch on Friday, there will be refreshment breaks scheduled both days. This will allow the opportunity to network, plan which presentations to attend next, or just relax and unwind (a popular activity for residents who have already presented).

Social Activity

On Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., a reception is planned in the Lower Atrium of the Fogelman Executive Conference Center. The Conference will provide hors d’oeuvres, and there will be a cash bar. Details regarding this activity will be shared by email communication with registrants, at a date prior to the conference.

Also note that the Beale Street Music Fest, located in Tom Lee (riverside) park in Memphis, is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 4, and continue on through the weekend. You may elect to stay in Memphis to attend some of this entertainment, but you will need to make your own arrangements for this activity. For more information see
