0545: The most annoying sound in the world -> hit snooze
0600: Wake up, morning routine and out the door
0700: Arrive at work and plan the day
0800: Review my antimicrobial stewardship patients
11:30: Lunch
12:00: See my patients
14:00: Meet with rounding ID physician to discuss potential interventions
14:30: Find the attending for my stewardship patients, review case and submit suggested interventions.
15:30: Head home to my real job (husband/dad)
The above is an ideal timeline of my day but represents only a moment in time. If practicing medicine was static then this representative day could be repeated over and over again resulting in great patient care, but our profession and the practice of it is ever changing We need to have an organized, systematic method of staying on top of that change. My solution for this universal problem was to become board certified and obtain recertification credit via modules. The ASHP ambassador program opportunity fell into my lap and it is providing me with exactly what I need - flexibility with a deadline.
The 15:30 entry is actually very true. I am passionate about pharmacy and advancing our profession but my real job is to be a good husband to my wife and dad to our 2 boys. I need to balance my professional life with home. The ASHP product gives structure to learning on a flexible timeline. So far, I have been able to work the hours into my daily life with little time taken away from my family. If anyone is wondering if they will be able to meet the time commitment BCPS requires, just know that it is doable for a father of 2 boys (4 y/o and 2 y/o).
