Join an ASHP student forum advisory group - We did!

ASHP provides many great opportunities for students to become involved whether it is within the student society, writing a student column for AJHP, or joining the Executive committee, a council, or advisory group. The advisory groups are a great way to network with students from around the country and provide ASHP with a student’s perspective on some of the programming and resources available to students. The ASHP pharmacy student forum has six advisory groups with fifteen students appointed to each. Each advisory group is split up into smaller work groups with one person in each work group serving as the lead. Being a member of an advisory group requires working on projects throughout the year and attending monthly conference calls. One of the main objectives of the various advisory groups is to create valuable resources for other students. Some examples of projects that have been completed by the advisory groups this year are creating an interview skills resource packet, a health observances calendar, and enhancing the available leadership development resources. Below are testimonials from current Leadership Development Advisory Group (LDAG) members.

I initially applied to join the Leadership Development Advisory Group during April of my P2 year because I was involved with my SSHP but wanted to find a way to become involved with ASHP on a larger level. I was not only selected for the advisory group but also to be a work group lead. I was initially worried that it would be difficult to balance serving on the advisory group with my other leadership responsibilities on campus but found that I was easily able to fit in the responsibilities after setting that time aside. I use my planner religiously, which helped me stay on track and keep everything organized. My favorite part about being a member of LDAG was getting to meet everyone at our Midyear meeting. I am definitely planning on applying again next year!      -Ally Webb, P3 Student

I found out about the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum through a student from my school during my P1 year. After becoming involved with leadership positions at my school, I was interested in expanding on what I enjoyed doing at the national level. I was interested in the Leadership Development Advisory group to help foster my own skills and to network with student pharmacists from around the country. I learned through my experience on the Leadership Development Advisory Group that balancing time and teamwork are crucial aspects of leadership. I was nervous at the beginning of the year because of the commitment that the position requires. However, I improved my time management skills significantly over the past year, making me a better leader. I enjoyed being able to work with many different student pharmacists from around the country. I recommend all students explore leadership opportunities like the Pharmacy Student Forum Advisory Groups. The networking opportunities and the knowledge gained from this experience will not only benefit yourself, but also make an impact on pharmacy!                       -Dip Patel, P2 Student

I joined the Leadership Development Advisory Group within the Pharmacy Student Forum because it provided me the opportunity to shape ASHP on a larger scale. In addition, the core goals within LDAG such as cultivating, encouraging and assisting others aligns directly with my own personal beliefs on the necessary tools for leadership development. I joined during my P4 year while balancing rotations and mid-year preparation because I wanted to ensure that I pay-it-forward. I wanted to provide insight within the advisory group on my past events and experiences to help ASHP continue to grow. Leadership is about developing others and ASHP provided the opportunity for me to do so through an advisory group. LDAG provides the opportunity to not only develop yourself as a leader but also inspire others to lead!          -Abiola Ojo, P4 student

I highly encourage YOU to serve on an advisory group! ASHP student members of ANY class year are encouraged to participate! The deadline to apply is May 1st!

Hi Daniel,

Typically (in the past), we have ranked our preferences on the application, and then we were appointed to one! I hope this helps, and we are so excited that you are considering applying to one of the groups! It is a wonderful experience, and best of luck in the application process!

Did you all get to choose which advisory group you joined or were you simply appointed to one that you had preferenced on your application? I am applying this year and I am passionate about leadership development, but I preferenced several different groups because I couldn't narrow it down to just one!

Thanks for sharing some insight from your time on the advisory group! It's encouraging to hear!
