Pharmacotherapy Intensive Study B- My Review

By Lindsey Childs-Kean posted 08-02-2015 10:09

Happy August everyone!  I took some time this weekend to complete the Pharmacotherapy Intensive Study B (Hypertension/Dyslipidemia) since I know that the rest of the month will get busier as we prepare for our fall semester to start August 24th.  Just a reminder that as an ASHP Recertification Ambassador, the recertification products were provided to me for free, but the opinions below are entirely my own.

First, a quick reminder of what the Intensive Studies entail: the live presentations were recorded at a prior ASHP meeting, and that is the content delivery.  You then have an assessment test, and you only have 1 attempt, but unlimited time, to pass it for recertification credit.  This particular Intensive Study had 3 videos for a total of over 2 hours of presentation.

I think most board-certified pharmacists have a good, basic handle on hypertension and lipid management, so I appreciate that this program was directed toward guideline updates.  Oh, and there have been a myriad of guideline updates for both disease states!  One of my favorite parts of this program was the comparisons and contrasts the presenters gave of the different guidelines, as well as the strength of evidence for those guidelines.  A lot of the audience response questions were statistical in nature, so if you need practice calculating NNT, this is your module!  The presenters came across very well on the recording, but like I mentioned in my review of Intensive Study A, I would like to have an option to speed up certain parts (maybe not all of it, but some of it).

The assessment was 22 questions, requiring 77% correct to pass.  I think this assessment was pretty straight forward, with the exception of one question, for which I have no idea what the "best" answer is.  Oh, and MAKE SURE that you claim BCPS recertification credit if you're BCPS certified; there's an option for BCACP credit too, and that one shows up above the BCPS option (almost messed it up myself, so wanted to alert you!).

Overall, I think this was a good update for me being a non-Amb Care specialist.  I very much appreciate the presenters spotlighting the controversies with the different published guidelines.

The Intensive Studies A and B are valid for BPS recertification credit through August 19, so be sure to take advantage!  Until next month!
