Professional development: becoming the person you’re called to be…

As student pharmacists, we spend a lot of time focusing on our future career goals. Most of us have plans to become residency program directors, leaders in research, pharmacy managers and/or start our own practices. The good thing about starting the journey toward our career goals is that many people have already walked the paths we are trying to take!

One of the many things I’m learning at ASHP is the importance of professional development. Professional development involves engaging in all kinds of learning opportunities geared to develop your professional qualities. I’ve heard, time and time again, that it is important to remain up to date with current literature, strengthen your leadership abilities, build connections with practioners established in your area of interests and to develop a strong network of references.

Learning from the past mistakes, current victories and the career paths of those more experienced will help us develop professionally. ASHP Connect offers a Mentor Match Program, which services to support members’ professional development needs. It is an online tool that facilitates the establishment of mentoring relationships. It is user-driven, allowing registered Mentees to search among registered Mentors. One can find individuals whose experience and expertise match areas in which they wish to be mentored.

Isaac Newton said “if I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” As students becoming new practioners the time is now to seek advice and mentorship. Through guidance we can effectively advance healthcare. Let ASHP Connect Mentor Match Program open the doors for you becoming the person you are called to be.
