The Heart of the Matter

The end of the year always brings some of my favorite things: snow, yummy baked goods, and fun gifts.  Unfortunately, there is less snow to be had living in Seattle now than the great state of Wisconsin, but I will be sure to make up for the snow sadness with treats :)

This blog post focuses on the 2016 Pharmacotherapy Core Therapeutic Recertification Package.  It is composed of two clinical topics: Cardiac Arrhythmias and Advanced Life Support and Select Topics in Infectious Disease.

I decided to focus on cardiac arrhythmias and advanced life support first, since I was due for a good refresher.  This topic was broken down into additional subtopics that spanned a good range for just an hour long video lecture:

-Rate Control vs Rhythm Control in AFib
-Stroke Prevention and Anticoagulation in AFib
-Treatment Considerations for AFib with Rapid Ventricular Response
-Antiarrhythmic Drug Interactions
-Adverse Events Associated with Antiarrhythmic Drugs: QT Prolongation and Torsades de Pointes
-Pharmacotherapy Considerations in ACLS

The speaker did a great job of getting to the heart of the matter.  It was written with the board certified pharmacist in mind.  Instead of focusing too much on the basics taught in pharmacy school, she delved into the clinical application of these concepts in a way that was easy to follow and retain.  The hour long video went by fairly fast!

This package has a little different assessment questions access than previous packages. The assessment questions can not be accessed until both topics are completed.  Despite not completing the assessment questions, the handout provided with the module and patient examples throughout the lecture video should help achieve a passing score.

Happy Holidays!
