Personal Leadership Accountability

To be effective as a leader you need to be personally accountable because you are the role model for your people. The following points come from the Mind Tools Club Developing Personal Accountability. Taking Responsibility to Get Ahead.

  • Personal accountability is
    • Being willing to answer for the outcomes resulting from your choices, behaviors and actions
    • Taking ownership of situations you are involved in and you don't blame others or make excuses if things go wrong. Instead you do your best to make things right.
    • Going beyond your own tasks and taking responsibility for your peoples’ results
  • Why personal accountability is helpful because it
    • Builds healthier relationships so your leadership influence is greater
    • Builds trust
    • Saves time and money as everyone looks for solutions
    • Boosts your chance of promotion
  • Enhancing your personal leadership accountability
    • Know your role so are clear about what you are responsible for and what results your team needs to achieve.  Be sure you and your superior are on the same page regarding your needed outcomes
    • Be honest with yourself and others which means setting aside your pride and admitting when you have made a mistake so also tune into your “gut feeling” when things are difficult
    • Say sorry when needed by apologizing and outlining what you are doing to correct the situation, which helps everyone involved move on. People don't expect you to be perfect but to take responsibility for your actions
    • Use your time wisely as procrastination is a common way to avoid responsibility which may mean your colleagues feel they can’t rely on you which doesn't do your professional reputation any good
    • Don't overcommit as when you take on too much something will eventually fall through the cracks, which means you have let someone down. Before you take on a new task think carefully about your schedule and honestly decide whether you will be able to complete it. Say NO to the task and Yes to the person by suggesting someone else they might consider.
    • Make needed changes as when things haven’t gone as planned ask for feedback on what things to do in the future to ensure a positive outcomes
    • Reflect on you actions by asking yourself these questions at the end the day
      • What could I have done differently today
      • Where could I have taken on more responsibility and/or been more accountable
      • How can I build my learnings into my job from now on

Please share what works for you.
