Becoming More Resilient

Brett Blair in 10 Tips for Becoming More Resilient on coachbrettbair.com provides this advice, which is so applicable for pharmacy leaders.

  • Leadership is going to have significant ups and downs no matter how effective a leader you are
  • Resilience is the ability to become strong, or successful again after something bad happens, or to the have the ability to return to its original shape after it has been pulled, stretched, pressed or bent thus bouncing higher after being knocked down over and over
  1. Recognize that being resilient is a choice so consciously choose it
    1. Don't ever, ever give up, there is always a way to achieve your goal and you may need to take just a piece of it for the moment
  2. Identify resilient role models and do what they do
    1. Observing other successful people is helpful
    2. Reading or listening to biographies can provide ideas
  3. Focus on the journey not the destination and embrace gratitude throughout the process
    1. Only compete with yourself not others
    2. Are you better than you were last month
    3. Give up being a pharmacist perfectionist as a leader
  4. Help others by giving and getting your mind off of yourself
    1. What is your succession plan for your position and other key ones
    2. Invest in others growth and development
  5. Face your fears and learn to control your negative emotions
    1. If you aren’t a tad fearful at times you probably aren’t stretching yourself
    2. Giving your fear a name makes it just like any other problem which your mind sets about to solve
  6. Stay physically fit as resilience requires stamina and energy
    1. Schedule into your daily routine or it won’t get done
    2. Be sure you pay attention to sleeping and good nutrition
  7. Live in the moment by practicing mindfulness and be willing to sit still and take in the awesome power of now
    1. May need to schedule some time to just think and slow down
    2. May need to get out of your office by going to a coffee shop, bagel place. Library, etc.
  8. Take the next step everyday no matter how hard it may be
    1. Break it into smaller steps if needed
    2. Just taking some action is powerful
  9. Laugh as much as you can by not taking things too seriously
    1. Try as you might you can’t control everything so don't drive yourself crazy by trying
    2. Ask yourself will this really matter next week or next month
  10. Be happy as resilience and happiness are closely related and fueled by positive emotions
    1. You consciously choose whether you see what happens as a challenge and possible opportunity or a crisis
  • Resilience is not a trait but rather a capacity that involves behaviors, thoughts and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone at any point in their life so choose to become more resilient
  • Perhaps Nelson Madela summed it up best “The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing but rising every time we fall”

Thank you for sharing this.

Meghan Davlin Swarthout  gave me some advice when I was still a pharmacy student that reminds me of #7. She advised me not to forget to enjoy the now. I was always so focused on the future that I may have missed out on enjoying the present.
