I am beginning as to teach as primary faculty my Pharmacy Leadership Academy (PLA) six week course Leadership Influence: Maximizing Yours and Developing Others. Jennifer Tryon, Kate Farthing and Sam Calabrese assist me. We have over 90 participants and this is the tenth year of this totally online program offered by the ASHP Foundation. We have over 600 graduates (admin residents, aspiring leaders, current middle managers, DOP/COP) who now are designated as DPLA (Diplomat). Many have gone on to earn an on-line Master’s Degree as they can transfer PLA credit. The PLA is comprised of 7 six week courses and begins each July. Detailed information can be found on the ASHP Foundation’s Website under the Leadership Tab.

The learning outcome for our first week is:

  • Evaluate the talent management imperative, including recruiting, interviewing/ hiring, training, developing, coaching, mentoring, and delegating.

Each week there are provided readings, a faculty narrated Power Point presentation, mini simulations and other thought provoking questions coming from the faculty’s experiences. On a weekly basis in an attempt to assist the participants to apply the material the faculty provide a Threaded Question that they need to respond to (150-200 words) by Tuesday and comment on two other student’s posts by Sat hence they benefit from the experiences of all the 90 plus students in addition to the faculty’s.

 This week’s Thread is:

  • “Discuss your plans to improve ONE of the following: Recruiting, Interviewing/Hiring, Training, Mentoring, Coaching, or Delegating”.

In addition to the Thread posts each participant has a Reflective Journal post that is just between them and the faculty, which this week is:

  • Select a person you want to develop and outline your plan to do so.

The faculty grade and provide feedback to each participant on their Thread posts and Reflective Journal.
