Biography

Michelle has served as Director, Educational Programs within the Educational Services Division of ASHP since January of 2006. In this capacity, she conducts overall planning, developing, and coordinating of continuing education programs such as those offered at the Midyear Clinical Meeting, the Summer Meeting, the National Residency Preceptors Conference, and Great eXpectations for New Practitioners.

She also serves as an internal consultant to other ASHP offices and divisions on planning and developing educational programs, such as the Pharmacy Practice Sections and Forums. Michelle has been instrumental in the planning and execution of ASHP's first conference for new practitioners, entitled Great eXpectations, where pharmacy practitioners gained insight on issues unique to those in the first few years of practice. In 2011, this conference will go virtual -- ASHP's first foray into virtual conferences.

Prior to joining ASHP, Michelle served as Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Medication-Use Safety and Quality at Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington DC. In her role, she championed the hospital's Medication Safety Program including the medication error reporting program and implementation of safety initiatives; assured institution-wide compliance with JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals; directed departmental compliance with United States Pharmacopoeia Chapter <797>; was responsible for the pharmacist training and competency assessment program; and was instrumental in the institution-wide implementation of computerized prescriber order entry system (CPOE). At CNMC, she chaired several committees, including the Medication Safety Committee, the Committee on Preprinted Orders, and the JCAHO Subcommittee on High-Risk Medications. Michelle was also member of numerous committees, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Michelle has actively been involved with ASHP at the state level as well. From 2003 through 2005, she served as Treasurer for the Washington Metropolitan Society of Health-System Pharmacists, an ASHP state affiliate.

Michelle completed the ASHP-accredited Residency in General Pharmacy Practice at CNMC in 2002. She completed ASHP's Leading Edge Program for Emerging Pharmacy Leaders in 2003. She holds appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor at both University of Maryland and Howard University Schools of Pharmacy, and achieved Green Belt certification in Six Sigma (a quality improvement methodology) in 2005. Michelle completed pre-pharmacy courses at The George Washington University and received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Howard University School of Pharmacy.

In her spare time, Michelle travels to all corners of the globe pursuing new cuisine and memorable experiences.
