First let me say that I think there was some terrific educational material presented in the Informatics Institute. For the second year, the section got some very thought-provoking and pretty technical material out in front of those of us who really need it

I have been long concerned that the discussions regarding pharmacy informatics from a policy perspective seem to lack a complete perspective. Nowhere does that feel more true than with the area of training pharmacists in informatics. While we have for years had a mandate that schools of pharmacy teach informatics to pharmacy students, there seems to be relatively little concrete attention to the types of roles a pharmacy informaticist might play, or that some of the proposed informatics subjects probably don't apply at all to someone who just needs to be effective in their role as a pharmacist. Informatics is a tool. Like all good tools, it needs to be suitable to the purpose, and so must ultimately be designed by experienced tool-users to best meet the needs of those who use the tool. Like many tools, clinical informatics is a tool that requires some training to use

Technology has always been a strong interest and passion of mine, and fittingly pharmacy informatics is the area of practice in which I intend to specialize upon graduation. This past spring I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to spend one of my APPE rotations at ASHP working primarily on projects within the section for pharmacy informatics and technology

I've also attend as many of the ASHP CE sessions on informatics. Over the last 10 years, ASHP has continued to grow the offering and depth of informatics sessions. I must say that ASHP has been my one sustaining source of CE on informatics. As Pharmacy Informatics has grown and matured, the skill set has also grown but not in a organized fashion. Each of us in the world of pharmacy informatics builds our own specialized and individualized set of skills
The Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology – Section Advisory Group (SAG) on Pharmacy Informatics Education hosted a networking session on Wednesday, December 5 th during the Midyear Clinical Meeting. The goals of the session were to discuss early exposure to informatics in Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE), as well as Informatics and clinical decision support training during Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)
I’ve always been interested in pharmacy informatics and technology. I am currently a member of ASHP’s Pharmacy Student Forum’s Community and eCommunications Advisory Group, as well as the Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology’s Pharmacy Informatics Education Advisory Group. I knew that I wanted to experience firsthand the role of an informatics pharmacist – and an APPE rotation seemed like the perfect opportunity
Would you like to participate in the exciting informatics session Informatics Pearls 2014: “Bytes” of Informatics? The ASHP Informatics Pearl session was a hit last year and is back by popular demand!

I chose to do a rotation in pharmacy informatics because I have always been interested in technology. A rotation in pharmacy informatics seemed like a natural choice, as it would combine two interests that I have
