The Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) is sponsored by ASHP and the ASHP Research and Education Foundation and includes a consensus summit, a robust social marketing campaign, and program evaluations. The goal of this initiative is to significantly advance the health and well being of patients by developing and disseminating a futuristic practice model that supports the most effective use of pharmacists as direct patient care providers. #PPMI

My first reaction was that this was both anticipated and understood in discussions at the PPMI summit in November of 2010!

What is PPMI? You might have heard it on rotation, or while working, and you definitely heard it if you attended The Midyear. These days PPMI is definitely a buzzword in hospital pharmacy practice. The Communications and eCommunications Section Advisory Group will create a series of blogs in the coming weeks ranging from, “Hey, what is PPMI?” to breaking down opportunities students and interns have to further the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative

As I began my internship with ASHP in June, I wanted to help define students’ role in PPMI and discover how to expand the message and recommendations of PPMI to more students throughout the country
Last week, here in Cleveland, the Cleveland Clinic hosted a summit for ASHP leaders to promote the PPMI. It was quite monumental- prominent pharmacy leaders from ASHP and from strong academic hospitals traveled from all over the country to Cleveland, to speak on the growth of the PPMI initiative and how it can apply to our hospital
As part of the PPMI, ASHP has utilized social media to provide information to members and other interested practitioners as soon as possible
Over the past month I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about PPMI and educating my classmates on the ongoing ASHP movement to truly advance practice
