I matched- now what? Identifying the need for post-match resources

A new residency class is up and running in healthy-systems across the nation, but only a few months ago these individuals were navigating the challenges of transitioning from student to pharmacy resident.  Many of these individuals utilized a multitude of pre-match resources that helped them navigate the residency application process.  Then Match Day finally came and the email stalking began.  Some may have taken the sleep in and hope it’s there when I wake up approach.  Others may have hit the Send/Receive button for hours waiting for the long awaited email that said “Congratulations! You have been matched.”  Once the dust settles from all of the phone calls and celebration, at some point all of us think “now what?”  The months leading up to the beginning of a PGY1 residency are filled with bittersweet endings and excitement for the future.  This time period is both exciting and for some overwhelming.  Between the stresses of finishing P4 requirements, preparing for boards, all of the emotions that come with graduation and for many a move to a new city, it’s easy to see how some may long for guidance on successfully navigating this transition.  I personally spent a lot of time on message boards searching for exam prep tips and information on preparing for residency.  But aren’t there resources out there to help students navigate the post-match period just like the helpful ones we had prior to Match Day?  The answer is yes but we may need more.

There is a great resource available from ASHP called Career Transitions (http://www.ashp.org/menu/MemberCenter/SectionsForums/NPF/Career-Transitions.html).  This resource provides targeted information for new practitioners during key career transitions.  There are four stages in the resource:  Student (Pre-Match), Student (Post-Match), Resident, and New Practitioner.  The Post-Match resource page is filled with guidance on licensure, time management tips, residency research, and more.  I think back to the hours I spent on message boards to find only a fraction of the information this resource offers.  If you are a current resident or seeking a residency, take a look at the Career Transitions resource.  As a current resident, can you think of additional topics that would have really helped you transition into your residency?  For students, is there something you have questions about that would help you navigate the residency process?  Please comment below with your thoughts and suggestions on post-match resources.

This is great! Even the pre-match material. I know I will appreciate the post-match links just as much once it comes and goes. Thank you!
