ASHP Externship- Part 1

By Ashley Duty posted 09-13-2011 21:23

I thought I would take the time to share some of my thoughts about what has happened thus far in my APPE rotation with ASHP.

Stacy Livingston and I started working at ASHP HQ in Bethesda, MD at the beginning September. Luckily, we were spared experiencing the earthquake AND the hurricane. Stacy is working with Jill Haug, Director of Forums while I am working with Karl Gumpper, Director of the Section on Pharmacy Informatics and Technology. They sure have given us quite a few projects. But don't worry, we've had time to grab some Georgetown Cupcakes as well. Yesterday was the first day at the office for new ASHP CEO/ Executive Vice President, Dr. Paul Abramowitz. ASHP had a wonderful luncheon to welcome him to the office as he and Dr. Manasse will work side by side until through the end of the year.

Over the weekends, we've been staying quite busy. Thus far we have visited multiple Smithsonian museums and got a chance to visit the Newseum (for free) on Saturday to see their September 11th tribute. If you head to DC and only have time to visit one museum, visit the Newseum! It's usually around $20 to get in but there is a TON of interesting things to see. We were in there for 6 hours and still didn't see everything... and don't think we're some crazy, boring museum people... we usually get bored after an hour. :)

The other thing we've been busy doing... eating! DC has some magnificent food. I had a crab cake pasta this weekend that was to die for. And the cupcakes are everywhere. We've also spent some fun evenings in Adams Morgan and Dupont.

So far we're having a lot of fun and are really looking forward to Policy Week starting Monday... More updates to come at the end of the month!

Aren't those cupcakes the most amazing cupcakes ever?? They have a chocolate mint one that's so good. I was out there for my FDA rotation during my P4 year, and we had a day at ASHP headquarters.. - it's definitely a nice location. Enjoy the city-it's a great place to be.. and eat. :)
I never made it to the Newseum- sounds like fun!

Your post makes me nostalgic as I reminisce about my time at ASHP on an APPE rotation. Sounds like you ladies are having great experiences so far and I'm glad you're taking advatange of free time to explore the sights, sounds and eateries in DC! Did you find the pharmacy establishment in Adams-Morgan? Best wishes as you approach Policy Week and Legislative Day!
