"Pharmacy Forecast 2013-2017" for the New Practitioner

By Ashley Duty posted 01-08-2013 23:37

As new practitioners, it's even more important that we prepare for the future. It's evident that healthcare is changing every day and that our role as healthcare providers will continue to evolve. Over the past week the classmates in my Master's in Health-System Pharmacy Administration class discussed Pharmacy Forecast 2013-2017 along with our professor, ASHP Past-President Mick Hunt. The ASHP Foundation and William Zellmer created a document that discusses what health-system pharmacy leaders believe will be the biggest challenges over the next 5 years. A survey was sent to 150 Forecast Panelists (identified by the ASHP Sections) who were polled on 8 domains. The results for their polls are presented in each of the 8 domains and then discussed by experts in the field. Finally, major strategic recommendations are highlighted at the end of each domain.

While I could go on and on about the different sections and things I agree/disagree with, I think it's more important to emphasize how important this report is for new practitioners. Those of us who have recently entered the job market will be most impacted by the predictions of the Forecast Panelists. Their views represent the views of our bosses and those we will work for in the future. For example, the second domain discusses the Pharmacy Practice Model. Whether you're a staff pharmacist or a clinical specialist, you will be impacted by changes in practice models. New Practitioners who understand the direction their department is moving and the vision of their boss will have the best opportunity to excel in that environment.

Changes are going to happen over the next 5 years at all of our jobs. I urge new practitioners to take advantage of this document and share it with others at your institution.

Doug Scheckelhoff, ASHP Vice President of Professional Development, provided this quote for our discussion about the document:

"A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be". -Wayne Gretzky
