ASHP Celebrates Pharmacy Week

By Athena Triglia posted 10-18-2021 07:00

The third week in October is National Pharmacy Week, and although our profession is known for being humble servants to patient care, this week is to recognize our perseverance throughout a year of unimaginable challenges. This week, the importance of appreciating our pharmacists and our profession has never been greater.

Although this year has been full of unknowns, our profession has advanced, challenged, and continues to put patient care at the center of our attention and objectives. This month, I challenge you to choose to acknowledge and appreciate how far you have come, what you have accomplished, and how you have grown as a future pharmacist. Whether these acknowledgements are related to academic success or perseverance, practice-related clinical interventions or suggestions, or personal growth, be sure to take this month to reflect on those accomplishments and celebrate your involvement in this profession.

A few things that I would like to appreciate during this month include:

Our personal and professional resilience. Whether your professional setting includes serving patients directly or indirectly amongst this pandemic, we have remained flexible, willing, and continue to give our best each day to better serve the patients in our communities. Resiliency on a personal level can represent a variety of things, whether you have remained resilient to academic challenges through this virtual learning environment, or resilient towards managing your personal and professional well-being, remember that you embody resilience in many forms, and there is always something to be proud of.

Our profession’s ability to advocate for our patients, as well as our ability to advocate for our profession. As pharmacists, we utilize our medication expertise either directly or indirectly to serve as a patient advocate. It is important to understand that being a patient advocate and a personal advocate most likely go hand in hand. For example, in order to effectively advocate for our patient’s care, we must also advocate for our involvement in that care. During this month, celebrate your ability to continue to learn how our profession is growing, and how the care we give to our patients is advancing based on our ability to advocate for ourselves. A great example of advocating for our role as student professions is participation in this month’s Student Day of Action! Our profession’s ability to care for our patients, as well as ourselves. All our profession’s objectives relate directly to patient care and overall patient satisfaction with their care. Our selfless advancement initiatives revolve around providing more accessible, affordable, and personalized care to the patients in our communities. However, in order to provide the best care to our patients, we must also take care of ourselves. Prioritizing our own health and wellness during this year will allow ourselves as healthcare professionals to provide the best care possible.

When the world shut down, pharmacists continued to show up. I challenge you to continue to show up for this profession, but also for yourself. Prioritize yourself as you continue to prioritize your patient’s care during this month of appreciation for the profession of pharmacy.
