Take Care of Yourself

It is crazy how time flies. As I reflect on the last few years, I realize how different time has felt. So much has happened and at the same time, so much hasn’t. The pandemic continues, and we’ve continued with it, but life is not the same as it used to be. I’ve seen the least of my family and friends than I think I ever have in almost two years - in person anyway. At the same time, I’ve continued with pharmacy school, and now I am on my fourth APPE rotation and am almost halfway done with my final year in pharmacy school. It feels like only a few months ago I was starting my final didactic year and then suddenly… it was time to start APPE rotations.

I am incredibly grateful for the development of the COVID vaccine. What an incredible tool available to all to help put an end to this COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the reason I can be in person on my APPE rotations absorbing all the experiences I can before graduation. I truly feel for all the students that had to rapidly adapt and acclimate to a new learning environment and the struggles that we have all had to overcome as a result. It’s been tough. Pharmacy school is generally considered to be a difficult endeavor, but we’ve all had to add on the stress of a global pandemic and have had to adapt to new learning environments – some of us starting pharmacy school in a virtual environment.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has not gone away, and we continue to see surges. Somedays it seems like it will not end and other days we can see some light at the end of the tunnel. We are all tired in so many ways. We all want to move on with our lives and return to some sort of normalcy. Some of us feel numb and almost immune to the stress of the pandemic around us. Now more than ever, it is so important to take care of yourself. Whatever self-care looks like to you – exercising, disconnecting from technology, spending time with family or friends (virtually if necessary), cooking, reading, etc. – be sure not to stop doing those things and taking that time for yourself. It is crucial to your wellbeing. One thing I do each day is reflect on a few good things that happened during the day. Whether I write it out or go through it in my mind, I take the time to reflect on the positives of each day.

In essence - take in all that you can but be sure not to give all of yourself. You must take care of yourself to be able to effectively care for others.
