Pharmacy Technician's - Making a Difference in 2020

By Barb Hintzen posted 01-17-2020 14:08

2020 is here...wow!!  Time goes by so fast!  With each new year many of us reflect on what we have accomplished, where we are, and where we want to be both professionally and personally.  We ask ourselves questions like:  How can I make a difference? What is my next step to advance, or can I advance? Is this my true calling? These types of thoughts can weigh heavily on our minds, and the choice to be a pharmacy technician is not always an easy career path to navigate.

Hopefully, you are not feeling burnt out and questioning your choices.  As a fellow pharmacy technician, I challenge you to make this a great year!! Take your role to the next level, pursue additional training, education and certifications.  Be engaged, greet new challenges with a “get it done” attitude and don’t let others determine how great YOU can be.

You might be thinking that your job isn’t going to change, and asking yourself: why do more or why support initiatives that seem to be all talk and no action?  As individuals we must make our own choices to ensure the best outcomes for our own future.   Did you ever consider that the choices we make to advance ourselves also serve to support other pharmacy technicians who pave the way for a bigger and better professional careers for all of us?

I believe pharmacy technicians can make a difference and drive change.  It is time pharmacy technicians start acting instead of waiting for others to act on their behalf. We don’t have to wait and settle for what is predetermined for us.  We can make changes by completing training programs, achieving certifications, earning degrees and raising the bar one technician at a time.  Employers look for people who have more than just met the minimum requirements.  They want people who exceed expectations.  Gaining knowledge and showing initiative as individuals and collectively as a group will speak to our desire for advancement and prove our eagerness to take on additional responsibilities.

We are not alone; pharmacy technicians are over 400,000 strong across the United States.  Have we really rallied for a higher level of state and or national requirements for all technicians?  Increasing the requirements to hold the title of “Pharmacy Technician” is the first step to justify a career advancement and achieving complete recognition as part of the healthcare team.

This year I challenge you to set a professional goal. Resolve to place yourself at the top this year and get noticed.  Make this year one to remember for yourself and for those who strive to be a high functioning future pharmacy technician.

I've talked to many technicians who feel discouraged from achieving because there aren't always tangible short-term benefits.  I enjoyed your reminder of the larger perspective.

This really is an exciting time to be a pharmacy technician.
