Writing for the Pharmacy Student Column

AJHP now offers an opportunity for students in featuring articles highlighting our role throughout pharmacy school. This is a great way for us to share our success stories, collaborate with our pharmacy student colleagues, and prepare for a successful transition in becoming new practitioners. This past summer, I took the initiative to write an article for the pharmacy student column. I learned a lot throughout the entire process and I highly encourage other students to take advantage of this opportunity.

You can start by picking a topic that other students can relate to. I chose to write about the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) because I am passionate about helping advance our profession and expand the role of pharmacists. The experience turned out to be highly rewarding. Not only did it give me an opportunity to help other students understand PPMI and learn ways we can get involved, but it also taught me personally a lot more about the topic.

Once you select a topic, you simply need to follow the formatting guidelines. When everything is complete, you submit and track your manuscript via AJHP’s website. If your submission is approved, you will have the opportunity to work with an AJHP staff editor to finalize the piece. This was my first experience writing for a journal and I found it very interesting to learn more about the submission and editorial process. It is a unique opportunity to gain some experience and familiarize yourself with the different steps towards publication.

Overall, my experience was very enriching. It gave me a chance to discover more about a topic of my choice, help other students learn about it, and help advance our profession. If you are considering publishing an article in a professional journal I would highly recommend writing for the pharmacy student column. Considering that the publication process can be quite complex, this is a great place to start. It is a valuable opportunity to get a headstart and gain additional experience before graduation.
