Ask not what your profession can do for you - Ask what you can do for your profession!
Answer? PPMI HSA
"The who, what, and where? Those are foreign acronyms to me!"
This was the response that I received today when asking Wilkes University pharmacy students if they had heard of PPMI before. Blank stares. So for the next forty-some-odd-minutes, we talked all about PPMI (Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative). We did this from a 10,000 foot view because the P2s had an exam at 1300, and I didn't want to be THAT guest speaker who didn't give them 10 minutes of last minute cramming time. (Honestly, the cramming never works. Meditation or subject distractions may actually help you do better on the exam). We talked about the history of health-system (hospital) pharmacy practice and how it has evolved immensely in the past 50 years. I detailed the PPMI Summit, defined the PPMI vision, and described the five major themes that encompass all 106 recommendations (pharmacists closer to patients; technicians; informatics/automation; safe and quality use of medications; pharmacist accountability). I showed them the
PPMI website
and how to access the
PPMI Hospital Self-Assessmen
t (HSA). We discussed
why
PPMI is important for pharmacists, for technicians, and, most importantly, for patients. I had such a blast engaging with these student pharmacists, that I was disappointed when I reached the end of my slides (Q&A time).
Since this was the first time that most of the students were exposed to PPMI, I specifically highlighted ways that student pharmacists can become involved with PPMI.
1. Familiarize self with the PPMI Summit Proceedings (Published in the 6/15/11 issue of AJHP)
2. Assist a preceptor with the PPMI HSA completion
a. Summer Internship
b. IPPE/APPE rotations
3. Collaborate with a preceptor/mentor to write a
PPMI Case Study
(it's free - anyone can write one!!)
4. Facilitate a discussion or question in the
PPMI Community
on ASHP Connect
But wait... it doesn't have to be just students assisting with PPMI HSA Completion!
Check out a new
PPMI contest
that will be promoted at the upcoming Regional Residency Conferences!
Residents who assist in the completion of the PPMI HSA and submit information by
July 1, 2013
will be eligible to win one of five complimentary registrations to the 2013 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, FL. See the
PPMI flyer
for details, which will be available at the upcoming RRCs. Completion of the PPMI HSA - what a great way to leave your mark (legacy) upon your residency program!!
It's just a shame that my PGY1 pharmacy residents won't be able to participate in this contest; a student on an APPE Institutional rotation already helped Reading Hospital complete the PPMI HSA :)
