The Life of a P4

By Corey Melroe posted 10-27-2013 22:30

My name is Corey Melroe, and I am a P4 pharmacy student from North Dakota State University. Yes we have internet in North Dakota! There are a couple of different topics I’ll be blogging about this year, such as: Midyear, the World Series, Rotations, Politics, Residencies, CV stuff, and most of all Fantasy Football. Okay, so I might have to redirect my focus a little bit. For the most part though, I really just want to be able to share my experiences as a P4 and hopefully you can pick up some interesting stuff throughout the way!

One of the topics that I’ll spend a lot of time talking about this year will be residencies. As I speak, I’m currently requesting interviews to meet with residency programs at PPS during the Midyear Clinical Meeting. For those of you who don’t know what PPS is, it stands for “Personnel Placement Services.” PPS is a great event for pharmacy students and residents to interview with potential employers, residency programs, and fellowships. Most of all, I feel like it’s a great way to learn about different residency programs. As it gets closer to Midyear I’ll definitely try and hit on some of the high points for the meeting and what to expect as a student.

Outside of working on residency stuff, I am also in the midst of doing my APPE rotations. I am currently in Bismarck, ND at St. Alexius Medical Center completing a pharmacy management rotation. So far, I’ve enjoyed getting to see the administrative side of pharmacy. I really like the business aspect of the profession. For students who are thinking about rotation options for the upcoming years, I would highly recommend doing some rotations in a different area of pharmacy that you don’t have much exposure to (Nuclear, Management, LTC, Managed Care). Rotations are a great opportunity to explore different areas of pharmacy, and it’s never too early to start thinking about what areas you might be interested in.  Other than rotations and residency stuff, I’m also part of the ASHP Student Advisory group for Career Development and Education. As I start working on more Advisory projects I will try and share more insight into that group.

That’s all I’ve got for now. Thanks for reading!
