ASHP Re-certification Ambassador - New Practitioner: Pharmacotherapy Specialty Review Course & Recert Package

Hey Everyone!

It's been awhile since I have blogged so I wanted to remind everyone about who I am, what I am doing, and why.  I recently completed my residency programs at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (PGY-1 pharmacy practice) and the University of Chicago Medicine (PGY-2 infectious diseases).  I am now working as an internal medicine clinical pharmacist at an academic medical institution in Chicago, IL.  As such, it is important for me to stay up to date on all sorts of disease states and pharmacotherapy (not just infectious diseases, my area of interest).  ASHP provides me some free BCPS re-certification materials and simply asks that I write a blog post about using them once a month.

This past month, I started working on a new re-certification module: Pharmacotherapy Specialty Review Course and Recert Package.  This package is broken down into three groups (each worth 5.5 hours of CE credit).  Group 1 is CVD and Regulatory/Quality Issues, Group 2 is Research Design, Nursing Home Case, and Breast Cancer, and Group 3 is Pediatric Asthma, Medication Safety, HIV, and Pneumonia.  I chose to start working on the group 1 modules.  The presentations are recorded from a previous ASHP meeting but still come across as clear, engaging, and easy to understand.

Each presentation followed a patient case and incorporated guidelines and primary literature in order to explain the "why" part of how we are treating the patient.  I think this is my favorite format for reviewing and learning material because it helps me to immediately apply it to a patient.  I would say cardiology is one of my weaknesses (sooooo many trials, all with very strange names!!!), but the presenters did an EXCELLENT job of breaking down the topics and discussing clinical controversies in an unbiased manner.  They also pointed out weaknesses and strengths in various guidelines and studies while explaining their thought process when confronted with a particular patient.  I still have the regulatory/quality issues presentation to complete, so I am unable to comment on the exam questions at this time.

I learned a lot from the two CVD presentations and have already incorporated some of that into my clinical practice as well as student and resident teaching.  I look forward to finishing the rest of the modules soon!!  P.S. the deadline to complete this package is May 18th, so if you are interested I would get it soon!
