ASHP BCPS Re-Certification Ambassador: 2016 Pharmacotherapy Core Therapeutic Module (Part 2)

Hi Everyone!
It's hard to believe that February is almost here! With the end of another month comes another blog post (and one step closer to Spring). I was able to finish up the second portion of the 2016 Pharmacotherapy Core Therapeutic Module, which covered cardiac arrhythmias and advanced cardiac life support. This is definitely not something I do every day in clinical practice, so it was a good area to review.
The module used patient cases to cover a variety of topics, including:
Rate vs rhythm control in atrial fibrillation (and the various agents available to use)
Anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation
Treatment of Afib with RVR (when to use PO vs IV vs direct current cardioversion, etc.)
Anti-arrhythmic drug interaction mechanisms and examples
Adverse events, including QTc prolongation and Torsade de Pointes
The patient cases allowed the learner to apply the information in real time, which helps to solidify the message. Additionally, a very extensive and thorough handout was provided for supplemental reference. The evaluation questions were challenging but fair. The last day this module qualifies for BPS credit is on 3/15/17, so I would recommend getting started soon if you are interested!
Take care!
