By Dip Patel posted 04-23-2018 21:54

ASHP provides many great opportunities for students to become involved whether it is within the student society, writing a student column for AJHP, or joining the Executive Committee, a council, or advisory group. The advisory groups are a great way to network with students from around the country and provide ASHP with a student’s perspective on some of the programming and resources available to students. The ASHP pharmacy student forum has six advisory groups with fifteen students appointed to each. Each advisory group is split up into smaller with one person in each serving as the lead. Being a member of an advisory group requires working on projects throughout the year, the ability to work in a team setting, and attendance on conference calls. One of the main objectives of the various advisory groups is to create valuable resources for other students. Some examples of projects that have been completed by the advisory groups this year an interview skills resource packet, a health observances calendar, and enhancing the available leadership development resources.

Below are answers to common questions from current Leadership Development Advisory Group (LDAG) members.

1. How did you hear about the advisory group?

Dip Patel: I found out about the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum through a student from my school during my P1 year. As I learned more about it, I found that the opportunities provided to me through joining an advisory group would be very valuable to my professional development.

Joshua Park: I had the opportunity to learn about the Leadership Development Advisory Group from who served on an advisory group a few years prior. She directed me to the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum where I read testimonials from current and former advisory group members such as this one. Although I was initially hesitant, I can’t understate how invaluable it has been for my professional development to serve on an advisory group. I would encourage anyone who may still be on the fence to just go for it and submit an application.

Lin Tran: I initially learned about the advisory group during an SSHP presentation about the different Student Forum opportunities offered in ASHP. Students and advisors that were familiar with the opportunities discussed the different advisory groups and their roles within the organization.

2. What made you decide to apply?
