Protection of early pregnancy

By Gayle Cotchen posted 08-17-2011 11:05

I read an excellent article by AE Czeizel et al in the August edition of Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety and wanted to call it to the attention of others who are interested in women's health. Some of the topics presented in it include
(1) using flu vaccine, antipyretics and/or folic acid to prevent/reduce the teratogenic potential of high fever;
(2) comparison of synthetic folate (aka 6S-5-MTHF) to folic acid;
(3) advantages of the new oral contraceptive with folate
(4) efficacy of periconception folic acid with multivitamin and folic supplementation in reducing neural tube defects and congenital abnormalities, such as in offspring of diabetic and epileptic mothers
We plan to talk more about some of the issues addressed in this article at the Women's Health Networking Session at Midyear. I look forward to meeting you there!
