A Way to Get Our Voice Heard

By Kasey Thompson posted 04-16-2013 16:41

This morning I participated in a campaign fundraising event for the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Senator Lamar Alexander. During this relatively small event with the Senator and about 11 other individuals representing various industries, I was able to share ASHP member interests related to pharmacy compounding and provider status.

Fundraising events like these are common in Washington, D.C., as well as back home in the states and districts of members of Congress. These events provide constituents and/or the associations that represent them with unique opportunities to build relationships with members of Congress, express their interests and concerns, and support candidates who share their interests (e.g., compounding, provider status, drug shortages, etc).

The ability to participate in or host such events is made possible through contributions to Political Action Committees (PACs). In particular, my participation in this morning’s event was funded by ASHP-PAC. Our PAC is not the only way that we get our voice heard, but it is certainly a very important element of a comprehensive advocacy program. The more money the PAC raises, the more candidates we can support. Like any organization that wants to be seriously engaged in advocacy (and be taken seriously), ASHP is seeking to grow our PAC funds so that we can support more candidates who share our members’ interests (provider status, for example).

I encourage you to learn more about ASHP-PAC and consider making a contribution so that we can continue to represent you and support members of Congress who support the issues you care about. The work you do makes an important difference in patients’ lives, and it is our goal to share the important work you do with policymakers so that they can create laws and regulations that give patients access to the care that you provide.
