Pharmacy is a small world, after all: Student Pharmacist experiences at the OSHP Annual Meeting

Contributed by Angela Goodhart and Katrina Mann (current P4 students at Northeast Ohio Medical University)

As two fellow student pharmacists traveling to Columbus for the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP) Annual Meeting this past April, we weren't entirely sure what to expect.  The parking lot was filled, and as the only two NEOMED students heading down that afternoon, we were a little nervous.

As we walked in, we quickly found the meeting area and were greeted by OSHP executive vice president Bob Parsons, Mr. OSHP himself!

Glancing around at the large crowd eating lunch, we began to feel more at ease...over there, a recent alum and current resident at a nearby hospital, here one of our professorsover there a manager from work.  We soon found some friends from The Ohio State University that we'd made at ASHP's Student Advocacy training day in February and caught up with them, and took advantage of the opportunity to meet some of their classmates.  I even met a another student who'll be completing an APPE rotation in the DC area the same time as me!

We spent the afternoon attending various continuing education programming, where we learned about everything from new drug therapies to advocacy to how our feedback as IPPE students was being utilized to improve rotation experiences.

Then it was time to represent our student pharmacist chapter in the House of Delegates Meeting. I was so excited to be a part of this. We were surrounded by pharmacists and other students who were selected as the delegates of their chapter of OSHP. We voted to approve the OSHP statement regarding pricing of medications. The statement was written wonderfully, but it was nice knowing that as a student, my voice could have been heard during the Delegates meeting if needed.

The next day, we participated in an ASHP Student Leadership Development workshop, led by Drs. Garrett Eggers and Mark Hamm of the Cleveland Clinic.  We had an opportunity to work with a variety of student pharmacists from all over Ohio to develop and pitch pharmacy advancement projects. We even received feedback from a mock board as to whether or project was feasible and would be approved.

Then, over lunch, the incoming OSHP board members were sworn in, including the incoming president-elect, our own professor, advisor, and mentor Dr. Jackie Boyle!  Incoming president Dr. Julie Zaucha delivered an inspiring address, calling upon us to collaborate with all Ohio pharmacists, not just those practicing within health-systems, to continue advancing practice through a united voice.

After lunch, we had the opportunity to be a part of a Women in Leadership Networking Session, the first session at the state level in Ohio to correlate with the ASHP initiative We were able to sit down with other women pharmacists and hear about their experiences in certain situations. We were able to move around and discuss different topics with different women. I personally was enjoying the conversations at the table I first sat down with, and I stayed there the whole session. I learned about how women overcome speaking to what seems to be a predominantly male medical field. I greatly appreciated the tips that were shared on how to communicate effectively as a woman.

Our time at the OSHP Annual Meeting was a great experience as student pharmacists; it was thrilling to be involved and welcomed to what's happening at the state level.   As we continue to meet the leaders in Ohio pharmacy practice and innovation, it reminds us that pharmacy really is a small world, and coming together with one voice is sure to lead to continued advancements for our profession.

And lastly, we are so appreciative of the welcoming nature of every OSHP member to student pharmacists, helping us learn and grow in our profession. Thank you!
