Great Leadership Resource -- ASHP Leadership Resource Center

“Yesterdays thinking and solutions will not solve today’s or future challenges.”

This quote from one of the ASHP Leadership Resource Center’s modules sets the stage for the most pressing issues for the pharmacy profession – provider status and reimbursement. In order to transform the practice of pharmacy to provide opportunities for pharmacists to practice at the top of their licenses, leaders must emerge from all types of pharmacy arenas and at all levels of the varying organization with fresh ideas and insights. As a result, the ASHP Foundation, with the support of the Baxter Healthcare Corporation, created the Leadership Resource Center. The components of the Center include the Leadership Self-Assessment, Core Leadership Self-Development Prime, Leader’s Tool Kit, Leading for Influence and Advocacy, Clinical Microsystems: Transformational Framework for Lean Thinking, and Transformational Change. This is an excellent resource for ALL new practitioners to gain insight into leadership, what it means, how to lead, and how it relates to their current positions and future aspirations.

Leadership Self-Assessment

Are you curious about your leadership abilities? If so, this component of the resources is for you. These survey style assessments include the evaluation of the following areas: assessing the environment, creating clarity for vision to mobilize change, building trust, sharing power and influence, developing people, self-reflection, delegating effectively, time management, team effectiveness, and pro-learning and anti-learning audit. The assessments may be used as a foundation to build your leadership persona.

Core Leadership Self-Development Primer

Before one can become a leader, he/she must have a basic overview of leadership and the key concepts associated with becoming an effective leader. In addition to these topics, this primer covers goal setting, overcoming procrastination, prioritization, scheduling, and tools for thinking differently to promote creativity and idea generation, which are particularly relevant to the successful development of new practitioners. 

Leader’s Tool Kit 

So now that you are ready to lead the way, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a kit full of leadership tools already assembled and ready to go? If so, your search is over! The Leader’s Tool Kit includes resources such as SWOT analysis, strategic resourcing, assessing organizational culture, stakeholder mapping, force field analysis, six thinking hats, mind mapping, brainstorming, and reframing. These items will assist you with transforming your ideas into actions.

Leading for Influence and Advocacy

If not you, then who? Every person has the potential to influence and advocate for change. For new practitioners who are full of energy and fresh ideas, the question may be “how do I even begin”? This section will assist you with your quest to learn how to navigate the system and effectively promote your concepts by exploring areas such as communication and relationship building.

Clinical Microsystems: Transformational Framework for Lean Thinking

Due to the economic climate, people are doing more with less, especially organizations. This learning module is focused on assisting with producing quality services with decreased resources. Topics of discussion include the lean process, developing improvement ideas through change concepts, understanding high performing clinical microsystems, and continuous assessment of your microsystem using the 5 P’s: purpose, patients, professionals, processes, and professionals.

Transformational Change

To implement change that spans all levels of the organization and transforms the “old way of doing things” into an updated, effective, and relevant process, leadership from all facets must be employed. Without this, an industry changing idea may never get off the ground or deemed a failure. This module addresses key subjects such as collaboration, short-term wins, how to establish a learning culture, risk and failure, and seeing beyond normal limits.
