But what is a Network Facilitator?

You've likely seen the email from ASHP to participate in ASHP's Forum and Section Advisory Groups and Committees for 2018-19. As you consider the various advisory groups and steering committees, I'd like to point you to another option under Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists (SCSS) to become more involved: Network Facilitators.

I served as the Network Facilitator for Preceptor Skills this year and (though I really didn't know what I was getting into when I started) I found that I really enjoyed it! Here's a brief overview of what I did this year.

Networking in person:

  • This part is done at Midyear Clinical Meeting (which will be in Anaheim in December 2018). Your networking session will be held during the meeting (mine was on Sunday morning) and scheduled by ASHP. I promoted my session on ASHP Connect and Twitter (with the hashtag #ASHPPreceptor).
  • During this session, you present several relevant and timely topics to spark discussion with the attendees. Three to four topics are usually enough to cover the time period. You have some freedom to set up the session as you like. I took volunteers from colleagues that I knew would attend and had them lead "mini groups" with prompting questions. After a few minutes of discussion and shared ideas, each group leader presented to the whole room.
  • Following the Midyear Clinical Meeting, I compiled the ideas and sent out on a post on ASHP Connect.

Networking online:

  • Other ways to engage members include:
    • NewsLink submissions
    • Clinical pearls posted throughout the year to ASHP Connect (this is also scheduled by ASHP)
    • Posting articles within your respective specialty area through NewsLinks, ASHP Connect, or other communication

Also, as a part of my Network Facilitator position, I served on the SAG on Preceptor Skills Development. This group had several charges this year that included updating the preceptor resources on the ASHP website, submitting proposals to ASHP meetings (National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference and Midyear Clinical Meeting), creating webinars, and giving feedback to pertinent ASHP policies. Being a part of this group changed my whole involvement in ASHP. Through this smaller group, I made great connections, created scholarly pursuits, developed professionally, and made friends with members when I finally got to meet them in person at Midyear.

If you've ever felt lost or out of place in the thousands of members of ASHP, I encourage you to consider being a Network Facilitator in your specialty. It is a great way to find colleagues who are just as excited about your passion as you are and influence your practice in meaningful ways.
