Get Connected: gaining perspective through new experiences

By Matthew Bilhimer posted 09-08-2014 08:32

For a moment, I would like you, inquisitive pharmacy-minded blog reader, to consider the word “Perspective.” Take a second and ask yourself, what exactly is a perspective? Now, before rushing to consult the all knowing, I would like you to sit back and think for a second. Think about yourself. How do you approach everyday aspects of your life and job? Reflect on how you interact and interpret the lives and jobs of your family, friends and coworkers (especially phamily). Finally, after all of that thinking and reflecting, turn it around and try to imagine those thoughts from someone else’s point of view. Imagine how different (and wrong) your own thoughts could be! Boom! You have just discovered perspective for yourself.

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Perspective has been in constant flux for me personally this year. Moving one’s belongings halfway across a nation in nothing but a Ford Focus can have that effect. Perspective is not a new concept after two thousand miles of travel, one flat tire and two shattered car windows. One thing I have learned along the way is this: perspective is all about attitude. Life is full of changes both positive and negative. All of us know that change is coming. However, in order to broaden my own perspective, I have learned that I need to not only accept change but to welcome and embrace it. Give it a great big bear hug. This open attitude is applicable not only in my personal life but especially in my professional life as well.

Therefore, I’d like to make you an offer, curious (and hopefully hooked) pharmacy-minded blog reader. I offer you an opportunity to enhance your own perspective over the coming year with me. Every month I, as well as other members of my advisory group, will be contributing and encouraging others to get connected and breed discussion together on ASHP Connect. My goal this year is to be capable enough in communicating the latest initiatives coming out of my advisory group, the Membership Outreach Advisory Group, in the ASHP New Practitioners Forum. Hopefully, this year I will be able to accomplish my ultimate goal: to foster dialogue and enhance the perspectives of the newest generation of pharmacy professionals.

Stay tuned and stay informed!
