Leaders versus Managers

Fellow Pharmacy Students,

While attending the Leadership Development Workshop during the ASHP Summer Meeting this past week in Baltimore, one point became very clear.  We need both great managers and great leaders within health system pharmacy to develop, establish, and implement new programs to move forward and make PPMI successful.  While managers are often seen as being very efficient and keeping everyone on task while reminding the team of the feasibility of possible programs, leaders are often the visionaries who see the big picture and truly influence those whom they lead.  With this in mind, how would you differentiate a manager from a leader?  Can you be both a manager and a leader?  How have you seen managers being leaders and vice versa in your experiences?  What are some examples of great managers and great leaders that you would share?  Looking forward to hearing from everyone regarding the role of managers and leaders.  Want more information on the leadership development workshop?  Visit http://www.ashp.org/sldw for more information.
