The Midyear Clinical Meeting Will Shine Bright in Las Vegas

Dear Colleagues,

The 54th Annual Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition is about to begin in Las Vegas with the promise of an exciting week filled with world-class educational programming, dynamic speakers, and a host of networking and professional development opportunities. Our theme this year is Bigger. Brighter. Midyear, and I am eager for our over 25,000 attendees to experience everything the largest gathering of pharmacists in the world has to offer.

This year the Midyear Clinical Meeting will feature two keynote speakers. We are delighted to welcome Condoleezza Rice, who served as the 66th Secretary of State under President George W. Bush and will be the keynote speaker at the opening general session on the morning of Monday, December 9. We are also very pleased to welcome 11-time Emmy Award-winning actress and producer Julia Louis-Dreyfus who will be the featured speaker at our new morning plenary session on Wednesday, December 11.

In addition to these exciting keynote speakers, the 2019 Midyear will feature:

  • 440 speakers
  • 230+ hours of continuing education credit
  • 5,500+ posters
  • 26,000 + attendees
  • 100+ countries represented

The Midyear Clinical Meeting is the longest, continually running clinical pharmacy meeting in the world. While much has changed since it first debuted in 1966 with about 250 attendees, one thing has remained constant: ASHP’s commitment to providing the best educational programming designed to meet the needs of pharmacy professionals throughout every stage of their careers. For our 54th gathering, we have once again assembled an impressive array of experts who will speak on topics highly relevant to contemporary pharmacy practice in an evolving healthcare landscape.

Our time in Las Vegas will also serve as an opportunity to showcase updates on a number of important initiatives for our members.

On Sunday, December 8, we will host the ASHP Well-Being Collaborative, entitled Evidenced-Based Solutions to Promote Well-Being: Empowering Interprofessional Teams to Advance Patient Care. The session will start with leaders from the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) sharing the results from a recent groundbreaking NAM consensus study to identify evidence-based solutions to interprofessional workforce issues.  An impressive panel of participants from multiple healthcare disciplines will join ASHP members during the day-long session for a highly interactive and solutions-focused discussion.

Also, on Sunday, ASHP will unveil the new, member-driven recommendations from our Practice Advancement Initiative, PAI 2030. These recommendations were developed in anticipation of continued change in our profession over the coming decade and driven by scientific advances, emerging technologies, rising costs, and a changing workforce, among other influencing factors. PAI 2030 is a prime example of ASHP’s continued leadership in forecasting and advancing important change, equipping our members for success now and in the future.

Later in the week on Tuesday, December 10, there will be a special Town Hall where ASHP will share preliminary findings from the recently convened ASHP Interdisciplinary Opioid Task Force. Attendees will discuss areas of highest impact by hospital and health-system pharmacy and identify ways ASHP can support the successful implementation of the Task Force recommendations.

Finally, Tuesday afternoon will also feature “An Afternoon of Innovation and Science,” two special educational programs that will showcase how technology and emerging science will impact the future of medication use and patient care. Innovation and the future of pharmacy practice are critical issues to ASHP and the focus of our new Innovation Center, details of which will be unveiled in Las Vegas and shared with members over the coming weeks.

These are just a few of the highlights from a Midyear Clinical Meeting program packed with exceptional content. If you can’t attend this year’s Midyear in person, there are a number of ways to stay connected to important announcements and information from the meeting. Be sure to follow us on social media @ASHPOfficial and #ASHP2019 on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. These channels are a great way to see and hear what’s going on in and around the convention center throughout the week. Also, be sure to check out ashptv.com for daily highlights, interviews, and more content from Las Vegas.

Whether you are joining us in Las Vegas or following us from afar, I am sure you will agree that the Midyear Clinical Meeting showcases the absolute best of what pharmacy has to offer. Its success is a testament to the hard work of hundreds of ASHP members and staff, and we are immensely proud to share it with the world next week.

In closing, I would like to wish all of our members a happy and joyous holiday season. Thank you for your continued support of ASHP and for all that you do each and every day for your patients and the profession of pharmacy.

Sincerely,

Paul
