Pharmacy Leaders Distinguish Yourself

By Sara White posted 04-18-2011 19:27

As a pharmacy leader how can you differentiate yourself so you have more influence and impact

Since most pharmacists now have the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree, it becomes important to “stand out” not just for your leadership skills but also for the credentials you have, to say nothing of improving your leadership knowledge, skills and abilities.

Consider new opportunities to get a Pharmacy Leadership Focused Masters Degree totally on-line with no travel or on campus time required through a partnership between the ASHP Foundation and GlobalHealth Education. The Foundation’s Pharmacy Leadership Academy (PLA) is in its fourth year and beginning Jan of this year is using the on-line eCollege platform that the MS degree programs use. About half of the college credit required for a MS can be obtained through the PLA.  If you aren’t familiar with the PLA, it is nine, six week modules designed and taught by pharmacy leaders that qualify for pharmacy continuing education. The Modules are: Leading the Pharmacy Enterprise, Leading People, Leading Yourself (which I teach), Leading Change and Innovation, Leading for Safety and Quality, Leading Automation and Technology, Leadership for Effective Financial Management, Building Presence with Executive Leadership, and Leading for Results. You can find additional information at www.ASHPFoundation.org Leadership Tab across the top, such as, student testimonials, lists of participants, faculty etc.

Current MS Opportunities Associated With The PLA (Additional ones are being considered, such as, an MBA)

Simmons College. Ranked as one of the nation's best colleges by US News & World Report for graduate-level programs in health management, Simmons College has customized its traditional CAHME-accredited Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree to build a cutting-edge, fully online program exclusively for the PLA. This program will allow PLA participants to realize substantial cost savings over a traditional degree, as completion of the Academy offsets 28 of the 48 credits required to complete the program.  The remaining 20 credits will be delivered as ten 2-credit courses, each eight weeks in length.

New England College (NEC). Ranked as one of the top twenty online universities in the U.S., NEC is recognized for a curriculum rich in experiential learning.  New England College has tailored these graduate degrees to offer a unique 4-credit-per-course program, allowing PLA students an accelerated path towards graduation. The programs are:

  • Master of Science in Management: Healthcare Administration Concentration
  • Master of Science in Health Information Management
  • Master of Arts in Public Policy

New England College is granting PLA graduates 8 of the 36 credits required to complete the degrees, leaving 7 courses to be completed at NEC, each 7 weeks in length.  The NEC graduate programs may be taken in combination as a dual degree, saving additional time and money.  One or two courses may be taken at a time, making graduation possible in just under a year.
