Pharmacy Leadership and Steve Jobs

What can we learn from Steve Jobs leadership?  As with any of my blog posts I do not attempt to do a complete summary of the book but rather pick out keys that I think pharmacy leaders can use. Jay Elliot in The Steve Jobs Way. iLeadership for A New Generation explores Steve’s style.  The following are key points for consideration.

  • He thrived on following his passion to change the world and passed this on to all the Apple employees.
  • He was driven by the opportunities to create new products.
  • From the drawing board to delivery, he inhabited the product, living every detail of what the experience would be with it.
  • He knew he needed to surround himself with people as invested in achieving excellence as he was and he was open to new talent who could help.
  • His level of focus on details is one of the most critical aspects of his success and the success of Apple products.
  • Keep it simple, intuitive, and uncomplicated was his mantra.
  • He was really honest about his products.
  • He ensured the products represented him as a person.
  • Worked through his people and celebrated as a unit every success.
  • Always kept innovating.
  • Never listened to people who said it can’t be done.
  • As the leader was the face of each product and the company where ever he went

In summary he worked from his gut, intuitively, and knew from the first that if he assembled the right team, they would together provide enough creative horsepower to turn his dreams into real-life products.  He also understood, without having to think about it that innovation is not only a team sport, it needs to be evangelized-both internally and outside.

How should your leadership be like that of Steve Job’s? Please comment either here or in the Pharmacy Leadership Community Discussion.
