Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI): Defining the Future of Pharmacy Practice

By Scott Knoer posted 08-02-2011 16:04

On Friday, July22, The Chiefs of Pharmacy from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, the University of North Carolina Hospitals and Clinics, The Ohio State University Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic as well as a Section Director and Vice President from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and a Professor Emeritus and former Director of Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin came to the Cleveland Clinic to help us kick off our Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI).

In order to meet our patient’s needs in the era of healthcare reform and pay for performance with increasing demands for patient safety and quality, we must use our resources more effectively and more efficiently.  Departments of Pharmacy across the country are reinventing themselves to succeed in future healthcare models.  This invitational conference was the official kick-off for the Cleveland Clinic Department of Pharmacy as we put the patient in the center of our strategic plan to provide pharmacy services in this new era.

This is the largest gathering of Health-System Pharmacist leaders in the country for a private site visit and lecture.  These national leaders spoke to an audience of over 200 Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy employees from the Main Campus, all regional hospitals including Weston, Florida, Home Care, Ambulatory Pharmacy and Home Delivery.  Also in attendance were local pharmacy VIPs including the Dean of the College of Pharmacy at NeoMed and multiple pharmacy Managers, Directors, students, residents and faculty members from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.  Other Cleveland Clinic employees including regional Vice Presidents, Continuous Improvement staff, Nursing and Communications staff were  in attendance.  The proceedings were also presented through a Live Meeting to twenty-eight sites across the country including Minnesota, Texas, Kansas, Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan and North Carolina.  The proceedings were videotaped and the videos and slides will be available on the websites of the Cleveland Clinic Department of Pharmacy and the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative website.

The speakers shared their knowledge and experiences with our staff through talks including: An Introduction to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI), The Future of Pharmacy, Providing “Comprehensive” Pharmacy Services, Residency Training as Core to the Future, How to Leverage Relationships with Colleges of Pharmacy to Advance your Practice Model, The Importance of Developing Leaders to Move the Practice of Pharmacy, The Importance of and Process of Strategic Planning in Relation to the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative , and The North Carolina Pharmacy Practice Model Journey.  Scott Knoer, CPO at the Cleveland Clinic, moderated the session and the panel discussions.

The speakers had a tour of the Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy before the event.  They overwhelmingly agreed that the Cleveland Clinic Department of Pharmacy has the best facilities of any pharmacy department they have ever seen.  They were impressed with the use of technology and the high quality of operations after their tour by Sam Calabrese, Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer at the Main Campus.  By sharing their knowledge, these leaders will help us to develop a world class practice model to match our world class staff and facilities.

Thank you to my peers from across the country including Dan Ashby, Paul Bush, Rowell Daniels, Jim Stevenson, Bob Weber, David Zils, Steve Rough, David Chen and David Witmer for their selflessly sharing their vast experience with the Cleveland Clinic staff and the rest of the country through their video and slides that will appear on the ASHP PPMI website. You can view the program and some of the presenters now on ASHP Connect.
