Getting over the “Midyear Hump”

By Taryn Murray posted 12-22-2014 15:07

It often seems that pharmacy takes a backburner as we gear up for the holiday season; decisions on plans for next year, making headway on research projects and general preparation for the year ahead. It seems as though the Midyear Clinical Meeting comes at a time when we only begin to establish a level of comfort in our jobs and residency programs. Above all, December seems to be at a time in the year where so many of us need that special kick start to help us refocus and refuel our passion for pharmacy practice. This year’s 2014 Midyear Clinical Meeting was no exception. The beautiful California weather provided a relaxing backdrop for all the exciting programing and educational sessions. Anaheim was truly alive with a zeal for the pharmacy profession.

The meeting was an opportunity for all the advisory groups to meet in person for the first time this year. As a group we were able to reflect upon some of the great projects our advisory group has been working on. Among the many exciting things the New Practitioners Membership and Outreach Advisory Group has been working on was a New Practitioners Benefit Presentation on display during the Great eXpectations Live event during the conference. Great eXpectations is a program dedicated to new practitioners with the goal of connecting people, ideas, and strategies to help advance their careers. There were over 15 educational sessions during Great eXpectations this year, made possible by participants’ enthusiasm and desire for professional development.

During our advisory group meeting, we also heard about a NEW program ASHP was excited to announce called the Resident and Recertification Program! As a part of this program, residents are able to register and receive a free ASHP live or online Pharmacotherapy review course, as well as take a free Pharmacotherapy practice exam. The only fee incurred by the resident is $10 a month for the entire 7 year cycle, which meets all of the required 120 hours of the recertification needs (and then some). But it gets better. No payment is due until you successfully pass the BPS exam! Registration opens in January 2015. For more information and to reserve your space, check out the website: . This is just one of the many endeavors orchestrated by ASHP to meet the needs of proactive pharmacy professionals!

The experiences had in California this year can be summed up by the words of Henry Ford, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”
