Biography

William A. Zellmer, BSPharm., MPH, ScD (Hon), DHL (Hon), FFIP, is a consultant, writer, and speaker on strategic and professional issues in pharmacy practice and education. He has had a career-long interest in advancing pharmacy as a healthcare profession. He was the founding editor of the ASHP Foundation’s annual Pharmacy Forecast report. He nearly 40 years on the staff of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Early in his career at ASHP, he was Editor of the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. Later, as Deputy Executive Vice President, his focus was nurturing organizational effectiveness with responsibilities for pharmacy-practice advancement, strategic planning, professional-policy development, advocacy, and communications. Many of his writings have been republished in a book, The Conscience of a Pharmacist—Essays on Vision and Leadership for a Profession. Reflecting a strong interest in pharmacy history, he served several years as President of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy. He is a pharmacy graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, completed a pharmacy residency at a U.S. Public Health Service Hospital, and earned a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. Two universities have awarded him honorary doctoral degrees.
